Four Ways To Maximize Your Office Space

Research suggests that office layout and organization affect how employees work and a cluttered office may hurt employee productivity. Not to mention that if you ever have important visitors at the office (like investors or board members), a messy workspace can make a bad impression. Whether your commercial office space is rented or owned, there are things you can do to maximize the space and have a clean and organized environment for you and your employees.

Here are four tips to maximize office space:

1. Provide personal storage solutions for each workstation.

Each workstation within the office should have its own storage solutions. If you don’t have a ton of space to work with, there are slim cabinets on the market that can be tucked under a desk to save space. Mobile carts on wheels are also a great option to give your employees storage space that can be moved around easily. Since most things business-related are digital these days, the need for traditional filing cabinets and storage has diminished. The days of those giant, clunky filing cabinets are behind us. Get something sleek and modern that looks nice and functions as storage.

2. Declutter

This is an obvious tip, but clearing out anything you don’t absolutely need in your office space is going to make more room for the things that you do need. Go through boxes, files, folders, etc., and get rid of the non-essentials. Does every single person on your team need a stapler? Probably not. Do you really need that cabinet full of files from 10 years ago? Again, probably not. And if you do need to keep all of those files, we recommend having someone on your team work through scanning and digitizing them to create more physical office space. You can even set daily challenges and make decluttering into a fun team activity so it doesn’t seem daunting or overwhelming.

3. Take advantage of wall space.

Wall-mounted/hanging shelving can provide storage without sacrificing precious floor space. Your items are easily within reach or on display for fun personalization of your space. And stylish wall hooks are great for keeping your sweater or coat off the back of your chair.

4. Let there be light!

Research suggests that exposure to natural light helps boost your employees’ satisfaction levels, contributes to better health, and improves the work environment overall. If you are lucky enough to have an office with windows, remove anything that blocks the natural light from coming in so you can reap the full benefits of those rays of sunshine. And if you don’t have much natural light available, invest in overhead down-lighting and add small LED desk lamps.
